Red clover / Trifolium pretense / is a perennial herbaceous plant of the legume family. It has an upright stem up to 10-15 cm in height. Its flowers are pink and red. The leaves are green and circular, with a light green stripe in the middle. Red clover blooms from May to July. It is found in meadows throughout Bulgaria, in Europe and Asia, it is also found in North America.

Red clover has a long history as fodder for livestock, but is also used as a medicine, thanks to its many useful properties and qualities.

In 1930, red clover was a very popular anti-cancer drug prescribed for ovarian, breast and lymphatic cancer. The sickle-shaped groove of the leaves from Red clover has been thought to be a sign that the herb may help with cataracts.

Composition of red clover

Among the key components of red clover are flavonoids, phenolic glycosides, fatty acids, starch, coumarins, mineral acids, essential oil, salicylates, sitosterols and isoflavones.

Isoflavones are plant-based chemicals that cause an estrogen-like effect in the body. The herb contains phosphorus, niacin, potassium, vitamins C and E, magnesium, chromium, calcium, copper and iron salts, antitumor components.

The above-ground flowering parts of red clover are collected for medicinal purposes. Red clover can also be purchased in specialty stores and pharmacies in the form of dried flowers or as a dietary supplement.

The red clover has a very good antispasmodic, anti-inflammatory, sedative and expectorant action. The herb improves the function of female sex hormones, reduces the severity of premenstrual syndrome and corrects unpleasant reactions such as high blood pressure and hot flashes.

Red clover strengthens the body's functions after taking corticosteroids and various antibiotics. Helps with a number of female conditions, such as bone loss, which is associated with osteoporosis; mastitis; white current; hot flashes and menopause.

Folk medicine with red clover

In folk medicine, the herb is used to facilitate pregnancy. It is also recommended for the treatment of breast inflammation, joint diseases, eczema and psoriasis, goiter, blood purification, as a diuretic and a good expectorant.

Compresses and poultices for external use are prepared as 2 tbsp. dried Red clover are added to 1 tsp. boiling water. The decoction is boiled for 5 minutes, filtered and used to make paws and compresses.

To prepare a decoction to drink 1 tbsp. red cloverand pour 300 ml of boiling water. Boil for 10 minutes and strain. The resulting decoction is drunk 3 times a day, 30 minutes before meals in 100 ml.

The crushed fresh flowers of the herb are used for scalding with nettles and insect bites. In psoriasis and eczema, tinctures are taken internally. Diluted tincture can be used for rinsing the eyes in conjunctivitis. In case of persistent dry cough, drink syrup prepared from infusion.

Harm from red clover

Clover extract has a high concentration of isoflavones. Therefore, it should not be used by children, pregnant women and nursing mothers. The extract should not be taken by people who take hormonal preparations with estrogen, androgen, progesterone and their derivatives. Due to the high risk of bleeding, red clover should not be taken in combination with garlic, aspirin, ginkgo biloba, ginger.
