Dumplings are one of the most iconic Russian dishes, somewhat reminiscent of Italian tortellini. But they are a purely Russian creation, probably "born" somewhere in the distant and cold Siberian lands.

Today you will hardly go to make your own dumplings, because they are already sold in many stores. However, if you want to eat them like the Russians, do not make the mistake of eating them sprinkled with Parmesan or pecorino.

Even less with ketchup added to them. The Russians would feel genuine indignation at such a manner again, and they would be right.

That is why we present you here 3 classic sauces for Russian dumplings.

1. Dumplings with sour cream

Yes exactly. Ready-made sour cream, which we deliberately include in our list for classic dumpling saucesbecause although it is not a sauce, it is probably the most common way Russians consume their dumplings. An important condition is that the cream has just been removed from the refrigerator and added to the still hot dumplings so that you can feel the difference between hot and cold.

2. Dumplings with horseradish sauce

To prepare this sauce, prepare 250 ml of broth to which to add 1 tsp. cream. Stir well and allow the mixture to warm slightly. Separately fry in a little oil about 100 g of grated horseradish, add a few drops of white wine or vinegar. Mix the cream sauce with the fried horseradish, let everything boil and after seasoning with salt and pepper you will have classic Russian sauce for dumplings.

3. Mushroom sauce

Mushrooms are highly respected in Russia, so mushroom sauce is used for both dumplings and all other meat dishes. We do not intend to teach you how to make mushroom sauce, but in order to have a Russian flavor, you must add a little grated horseradish or at least garlic.

4. Milk sauce with mustard and mayonnaise

As we mentioned at the beginning, the Russians are very fond of sour cream, which is their most preferred addition when serving traditional dumplings. However, if you do not have cream, you can add mustard, mayonnaise, a little crushed garlic, salt and pepper to taste to a higher-fat yogurt. The sauce should again be served cold to the still warm dumplings.

In conclusion, we will add that nothing will stop the Russians from consuming their favorite dumplings with vodka, but nothing prevents you from consuming them with red wine.
