We are heading for a real Apocalypse with chocolate, reveals food professor Tom Benton, adding that the shortage of cocoa is becoming more aware.
The expert's predictions are final and he says that in the future chocolate eggs, which are bought en masse around Easter in Western countries, will disappear from store shelves.
In the report Destruction of Chocolate, a professor at the University of Leeds says that the need for cocoa is growing with each passing year, and it is not clear how long the planet's reserves will be sufficient for chocolate companies.
Such uncertainty with resources also creates price uncertainty. Professor Benton believes that in the future some of the companies may take advantage of the impression that chocolate products are running out and artificially raise their market value.
If the cocoa shortage continues with the same trend, in just a few years we will eat chocolate only on really special occasions, not every day.
The expert report says that 10 cocoa trees are needed to produce 286 chocolate desserts, which are eaten annually by Western consumers.
An alternative to dealing with the chocolate crisis is to grow cocoa in different parts of the world. India, Brazil and Indonesia have emerged as new markets for this type of industry.
Most of the cocoa we consume, nearly 70%, comes from Ghana, Côte d'Ivoire and other countries in West Africa, which are declining every year.
A chocolate shortage of about 100,000 tons is forecast for the next few years, and Professor Benton adds that even in these numbers we cannot be sure because of the unpredictable weather conditions.
