Two French students have come up with a clever way to prevent the huge food waste that has existed in the French capital, Paris, for years.
The young people have created a mobile application that provides an instant connection between the owners of shops in the capital and customers who want to buy large quantities of food, but at lower prices.
The application was released at the beginning of the year and is already enjoying serious success. The price that anyone who wants to download and install it on their phone has to pay is symbolic - 6 euros, but the benefits are many, and they are not only financial, writes Reuters.
In just two months after the release, the number of registered shopkeepers in the system has increased by nearly 230 percent of their original number, and there are now nearly 24,000 customers willing to shop for promotions.
The app connects shop owners in Paris with customers near them and through it the sites offer discounted products that have not yet been sold.
The French, although known for their gourmet cuisine, are creating the new app to make sure the food is not wasted.
The application itself is called OptiMiam. Initially, it connected Parisian bakeries with customers, but gradually all kinds of food outlets wanted to join the customer information system.
Every day, shoppers present in detail the online surplus food at a reduced price. The information is instantly sent to the mobile phones of customers who use the application and are closest to the site. The creators hope to get the necessary funds to expand their idea beyond Paris, and why not throughout Europe.
The problem of food waste has been registered throughout Europe. Recent sociological research shows that every Bulgarian throws away between 80 and 100 kilograms of food a year. These data are significantly higher in Western Europe.
In the Netherlands, for example, between 250 and 300 kilograms are dumped annually. Up to 80 percent of food waste in Europe, or 47 million tonnes a year, can be avoided, according to a study commissioned by the European Union.
