A ban on the sale of fruit juices that contain added sugar will take effect on Tuesday, April 28. The ban applies not only to Bulgaria but also to all countries in the European Union.
The ban is a fact thanks to a directive of the European Commission, which was approved in March 2012. The directive set a deadline of 18 months for its implementation. The ban on putting sugar in fruit juices was introduced in October 2013 and the 18-month grace period expired on 28 April.
Zhana Velichkova, chairwoman of the Association of Soft Drinks Producers, told Trud that the sweetness of the juices will come only from the fruits that are embedded in the juices.
Velichkova adds that the addition of aspartame sweeteners has been banned for years. According to her, the use of sweeteners in fruit juices was not allowed even before the ban was adopted.
From now on, BFSA inspectors are expected to monitor compliance with the ban. However, the new requirements for fruit juices will make production more expensive and the final product will now be traded at significantly higher prices.
Producers must achieve the taste of juices, using only fruits, vitamins, minerals and so-called. food supplements. The goal is to make the juices healthy and healthy.

The ban applies only to drinks that are labeled as juice. All those bearing the names elixir, fruit drink and the like can easily contain sweeteners and added sugar.
Consumption of natural juices in Bulgaria is still extremely low. The average Bulgarian consumes about 9.4 liters of juice per year, and for comparison in Germany the annual consumption per person is 34 liters.
High sugar consumption is associated with an increased risk of obesity, diabetes and the development of cardiovascular problems.
According to a number of experts, it is fruit juices have the largest contribution to obesity and diabetes in the UK, because only 250 ml of juice contains 115 calories, equivalent to 7 tbsp. sugar.
