Scientists have created a way to produce biofuel from bananas, RBC reported.
Researchers at the University of Nottingham are proposing to introduce the use of leaves and banana peels as a fuel source in African countries.
The result is briquettes that can be burned in furnaces for heating or cooking. In countries like Rwanda, bananas are an important crop used not only for food but also for alcoholic beverages.
Every tone bananas leads to 10 tons of waste: peels, leaves and stems. They are the ones that can be used for fuel, says Joel Cheney, a graduate student at the University of Nottingham.
After returning from Rwanda, he developed a technology in the university laboratory to turn waste into fuel.
Banana peels and leaves are mixed with sawdust and pressed into briquettes. Received briquettes dried in the sun for 2 weeks and can be used for fuel.
Their manual preparation does not require large capital investments. Many other attempts to develop fuel for Africa have failed due to high cost and unsuitability for local conditions. Mike Clifford, a professor at the Faculty of Engineering, considers this project a good one.
It is believed that the new technology can shorten the use of briquettes as fuel.
In countries such as Rwanda, Tanzania and Burundi, over 80% of energy needs are met by burning wood. This destroys the environment, as deforestation leads to climate change, and in some areas it takes many hours on foot to get firewood.
British scientists believe that their project could be one of the steps to help the people of poor countries save themselves from poverty and are ready to share their idea for free.
