E 621 or monosodium glutamate is a flavor enhancer that scientists define as harmful and addictive. In fact, it is not only this flavor that is defined as harmful - many of the E's can have an adverse effect on the human body.
Bulgarian scientists explain that even those chemical enhancers that are allowed to be used can cause serious health problems. We can easily become addicted to E-s and, accordingly, to the foods they contain, experts explain.
Thus, babies with congenital health disorders, such as autism, diabetes, and neuropsychiatric disorders, are increasingly being born.
It is possible that even these enhancers may be to blame for the appearance of some types of cancer, experts say. At this stage, however, there are no studies that clearly show that supplements can lead to addiction, explains Associate Professor Georgi Miloshev, who works at BAS.
The position of nutritionists is completely different. Iskra Piralkova, who has been practicing medicine and has been working in this field for 50 years, is adamant that these preservatives, dyes, etc., which are found in many foods, make us addicted to them.
Western experts claim that excessive use of these harmful substances is one of the causes of obesity.
Many people buy products from the store without even looking at the labels and thinking about what's in the product, experts say. For example, if the product you have chosen has E 250 on the label, it means that the product contains a food additive that prolongs its shelf life.
Even in the goods we buy and consume every day, such as bread, there are at least a few E's, experts explain. Most often, all these additives - dyes, preservatives, etc., cause allergies in humans.
With the new food labeling rules already in place, it should make it easier for people to find out what they are buying and putting on their table. Even packaged and bulk sausages and smoked meats have long been prepared with the addition of monosodium glutamate.
Part of the accepted requirements are for the E's to be explained to users in a more understandable language. This is especially true for those supplements that can cause allergies.
