Today the variety of foods is great, but only a decade or two ago the imitation products were unknown to Bulgarian consumers - cheese was made only from milk, mayonnaise had a short shelf life because of the eggs in it, boza had sugar, not artificial sweeteners, but synthetic vinegar could not be found even in science fiction books.
In the cheese began to add palm oil and a lot of calcium, in boza - a sad series of E instead of sugar, in perishable sausages the collagen content is often quite rich, and in bread the additives are all sorts. These processes are probably irreversible, because they occur not only in our country. Times have changed and various innovations in the food industry allow the production of more and more products that only look like traditional ones, but do not have much in common in terms of content. The bad thing is that the manufacturers of such products are trying to make consumers think that these are the same foods.
The first and foremost is to doubt, to realize that nothing we buy will be what we expect, just because we want it that way.
The quality of food is largely related to the issue of low incomes of Bulgarians - the main reason for the silence of the problem. The market logic is harsh - quality products are more expensive and practically inaccessible to a significant part of the country's population. That is why the state and the food industry followed the tacit agreement to remain silent and pretend that there is no problem.
Is there a chance BDS?
In search of a solution, the primary reaction to the situation evokes memories of the past and binding standards. People over the age of thirty certainly remember the taste and type of food produced twenty years ago. All this has changed because Bulgarian state standards are no longer mandatory. They cannot be at least as long as Bulgaria is a member of the European Union. This means that talking about BDS is just a waste of time, paper and ink.
In an increasingly globalized economy, the risks of acquiring dangerous products are increasing. Placing false information on labels in an attempt to disguise the true quality of products poses risks to human health. For example, if the consumer suffers from diabetes, consuming bread made from white flour and dyes becomes dangerous to health. Many people suffer from allergies to substances that, if not labeled, can also endanger their health. Therefore, state control must be well organized, bring respect to producers and trust among consumers.
It is often difficult to determine which product is better on only one or two indicators. When thinking from a consumer point of view, it is important for us how much we pay and what we receive. We need to watch out for misleading information or pictures on the label, and read carefully. Quality products must be processed in a way that does not change their composition. Modern food travels long distances before it reaches us. For this reason, it is good to know how far it comes. As far as possible, it has retained its nutritional qualities during this time.
Packaging is important, each food has its own storage technology to keep its basic qualities for maximum time. Do not buy goods with damaged packaging integrity and questionable appearance! This implies deteriorating product quality. When buying perishable products, you should ask the retailer to give you a product from the refrigerator or the environment in which it should be stored.
Choose stores and products with a good reputation and shop mainly from them. Learn to read the label, you will soon become accustomed to it and you will quickly see the information you are interested in. Shop at specialty stores for meat, milk, bread, fish, honey - there the products are regularly monitored by employees for shelf life and storage environment, and are more likely to come from clean areas.
Remember - if you compromise on food today, you are compromising your health in the long run.
