All foods produced in the mountainous regions of the country will have a special label guaranteeing their quality. Higher quality will also mean a higher price for these products.
The cheese and all other dairy products, honey and berry jam, which are produced in mountainous areas such as Stara Planina and the Rhodopes, will get a special label.
The news was announced by the President of the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development and the Environment of the European Social and Economic Committee Dilyana Slavova.
The goal is not only for the customers to recognize the better quality products on the market, but also for the smaller producers in the mountainous areas to be supported.
In the small dairies in the country the production is three times lower than in the big industrial cities. This determines their lower income, although they offer a quality and useful product.
The label will be a guarantee of quality, which will allow local producers to offer goods in more markets, even outside the country.
According to Slavova, such a practice is already operating in Austria, where the special label helps the local mountain food and works of local masters. Label expands sales and helps them grow their economy.
Higher quality for Bulgarian consumers will mean a higher price. But experts say that at least customers will be confident in the food they buy.
A similar attempt has already been made in Bulgaria to support organic producers in the Bulgarka Nature Park near Gabrovo.
All products produced in this protected area, such as dairy products, honey, herbal and cosmetic preparations, various wood carvings and many others were marked with a special label proving that they are the work of local traders.
A similar function is performed by the approved foods according to the Stara Planina and Bulgaria standard. They ensure that a product is prepared according to the technological requirements of an Expert Council.
