At the first reading, the deputies from the National Assembly agreed to abolish the value added tax on food products donated to organizations supporting the needy.

The proposal was accepted as an incentive for large retail chains, which, instead of throwing away expired products, can donate them without being taxed for their donation.

It will be possible to donate food, the expiration date of which will expire within 30 days. The current practice is to dispose of these products.

According to the latest analyzes, 670,000 tons of edible food are dumped in Bulgaria every year. With a portion of an average of 300 grams, this means that this food will be enough for a year and a half of starving Bulgarians.

According to the Bulgarian Food Bank, more than half of Bulgarians cannot afford the daily consumption of meat, fish and protein. This figure includes many children.

Compared to their European peers, Bulgarian children eat the most poorly. Every third child misses the daily consumption of fresh fruits and vegetables, which are mandatory to take the right amount of vitamins.

Unnecessary food was not donated because of the additional tax that traders had to pay. It was cheaper for them to destroy the products instead of targeting people who were starving.

With the introduction of the new change, however, the products will be able to be marked with the text Donation, not for sale and food to be donated.

Earlier this year, France also passed a law banning the disposal of edible food. From February, traders in the country are obliged to donate unsold food to charities and food banks.

Failure to comply with the norm is punishable by a fine and up to 2 years in prison.
