The total amount of food thrown away in our country, fit for consumption, would be enough to prepare 2 billion servings of hot dinner, if the products were donated, Darik Radio reports.
Nearly 670,000 tons of edible food are thrown away by Bulgarians every year, with the largest amount on holidays. Our people tend to buy more food than they actually eat.

Every year, the Bulgarian Donor Bank saves nearly 300,000 tons of food, but the discarded goods are still more than donated. At the same time, there is no bread for every third child in our country and every second adult.
To be donated, the food must be within the expiration date. However, leftovers from restaurants and households go directly to the trash, so the advice is the next time we go shopping, stick to a specific list - not shop, as if stockpiling a war.
On average, Bulgarian households throw away 43% of the food they buy. In this regard, our country is no exception to the European Union, which throws away the same amount of food, and it can be donated to 1 billion starving people in the world.
