German scientists from the University of Erlangen-Nuremberg have studied the reason why we can not stop eating chips until we eat the whole package.
Based on their research, the experts prepared a report, which they presented at the 245th annual meeting of the American Society of Chemists.
The authors of the study used two groups of rodents for their research. Both groups were given different types of food that had the same caloric content.
Some of the rodent specialists also ate chips. The German researchers then studied the brain activity of all the rats involved in the study using magnetic resonance imaging (MRI).
The results show that when rats were fed chips, their brain pleasure centers became much more active than when they ate any other food. The researchers added that eating chips also activates other brain centers that respond to various addictions, including drugs.
After eating chips, the rodents were much more active - playing and running faster, but the reason for this is precisely the activation of these centers.
Scientists even describe this condition of rodents as euphoria and add that people also become hyperactive after eating chips.
Experts also note that the initial euphoria of rodents soon disappears and turns into apathy and lethargy. All this is reminiscent of the signs of abstinence, experts say.
In the other group of rats, whose menu did not include chips, no such phenomenon was observed. The authors of the study believe that this is just the beginning of a large-scale study related to this type of packaged foods.
Scientists point out that these chips are mostly packed with additives, one of which is monosodium glutamate. It is a flavoring agent that has neither smell nor taste, but which directly affects the central nervous system.
