The apiary / Marrubium vulgare L. / is a perennial herbaceous plant with gray-green color. It belongs to the Lipstick family. The stems of the apiary are up to 50 cm high, quadrangular and branched. Its leaves are opposite, with petioles, round or broadly elliptical, toothed, and below with strongly convex veins.
The colors of apiary are white, located in the axils of the upper leaves. The cup has 10 identical curved teeth. The corolla is bilobed, the lower lip with a short lateral and wide middle part, and the upper lip is bipartite to the middle. The stamens are four in number, closed in the corolla tube. The fruit breaks down into four oblong three-walled nuts.
The apiary is distributed in grassy and weedy places, along fences and roads throughout the country. It blooms from June to September. It is also known as mild grass and apiary. Except in our country, the apiary is found in Europe, but without most of Northern Europe.
Composition of an apiary
The apiary contains the bitter diterpene lactones prema-ruby and marbun, as well as marubiol and vulgarol. It contains ursolic and gallic acid, β-sitosterol, choline, bitter substance, essential oil, tannins, resins, alkaloids, organic acids, saponins, sugar, waxes and others.
Collection and storage of an apiary
The above-ground flowering part of is collected for medical purposes apiary. Stems are harvested in May-July, during flowering. Cut about 20 cm from the top.
They are dried in the shade and stored in a cool and ventilated place. The well-dried herb has a pale green color, bitter taste and pleasant smell. The allowable humidity of the dried apiary is about 14%.
Benefits of an apiary
The apiary has a very good expectorant, disinfectant, burning, choleretic and strong antispasmodic effect. The herb is used for spasms in smooth muscle organs, chronic diarrhea and cardiac arrhythmia. The apiary has a beneficial effect on a disturbed heart rhythm.
It is used in diseases of the liver, inflammation of the kidneys and bladder, rheumatism, skin rashes, gastrointestinal inflammation, diabetes. The herb is a valuable remedy against bronchitis, whooping cough, shortness of breath and laryngitis. It is used as a blood pressure lowering agent.
Organic juice is sold in specialty stores apiary. It is a very good remedy for cough, stimulates the excretion of body fluids not only in the respiratory tract but also in the stomach. Helps expectoration in catarrhal inflammation.
The daily dose for adults and children over 12 years is 10 ml of juice before meals, three times a day. Strictly follow the daily doses listed on the package to avoid some complications. The apiary is used in the perfume and brewing industries.
As a result of experimental data, the alcoholic extract from the apiary's drug is recommended as a good expectorant for chronic bronchitis and emphysema.
Folk medicine with an apiary
In Bulgarian folk medicine apiary recommended for hemorrhoids, worms, irregular menstruation, cough, spleen and liver disease, rheumatism and bronchitis.
Externally applied in baths for skin rashes, hemorrhoids, wounds, inflammation, as well as for the application of paws in inflammation of the lymph glands and boils.
In folk medicine, the apiary is especially used for cholecystitis and hepatitis.
For internal use 2 tbsp. apiary mixed with 500 ml of water and simmer for 5 minutes. The decoction is drunk 15 minutes before eating, 4 times a day in 100 ml.
For coughing you can prepare a decoction of 100 g of apiary, which is flooded with 750 ml of water. Boil for 30 minutes until half the water has boiled, strain and sweeten with sugar.
