Today in the composition of many foods (and not only) you can see the food supplement called maltodextrin. For many, this name causes negative emotions, as this substance is practically unknown to consumers and they think that it is a harmful additive. But what is the truth and is this supplement harmful to our health?

Maltodextrin - poison or not?

This is a biologically active food supplement, which is a white or creamy white powder with a medium sweet taste. In everyday life maltodextrin is known more like molasses. The product is obtained by fermentation of corn or potato starch, less commonly used wheat or rice.

It is used in powder form, namely as a natural sweetener instead of sugar in pastries, baby food, diet foods and confectionery. Also, the substance has the following properties:

- helps to thicken and emulsify food;

- improve the solubility of soluble foods;

- slows down the oxidation process.

In industry maltodextrin proves to be very useful, namely used in the manufacture of bakery products, ice cream, sausages and meat products, spices, sauces and some beverages.

In addition, the fruit is sometimes sprayed with a solution of maltodextrin, as it protects against insect damage and helps keep it fresh during transport. According to research, the substance is also useful for the body.

- improves the absorption of many foods;

- helps better digestion;

- has a positive effect on the work of the intestine;

- prevents constipation;

- lowers blood cholesterol levels;

- provides the body with energy, as this substance belongs to the fast carbohydrates, ie after consumption it is quickly absorbed into the bloodstream and supplies the body with the necessary energy;

- helps eliminate toxins, salts of heavy metals and radionuclides from the body. The fibers of the substance "catch" harmful substances and remove them from the body through the intestines. An additional cleansing effect is achieved by improving bowel function;

- forces a type of body to produce its own insulin.

Lack of insulin leads to the development of diabetes, and carbohydrates such as maltodextrin powder, entering the bloodstream, provoke the production of its own insulin, which helps prevent diabetes.

Athletes and bodybuilders use this nutritional supplement as an additional source of energy that helps speed recovery after a workout. In sports nutrition stores you can buy pure maltodextrin powder for cocktails. Dissolves well in water and fruit juices, and it is best to mix everything in a special shaker.

The resulting shake can be drunk before a workout to provide the body with energy or after, so that the muscles receive the consumed carbohydrates and glycogen.

Maltodextrin is not a doping drug as it is found in many foods. However, cocktails with it are not recommended for athletes who want to increase muscle mass.

- the product may cause an allergic reaction. According to a 2013 study, the substance causes gastrointestinal disorders such as bloating, gas and diarrhea. Some study participants had skin rashes, hives and skin irritations;

- inhibits the growth of probiotics, which are special beneficial bacteria that are essential for healthy digestion. Maltodextrin inhibits the action of these bacteria, which leads to disruption of the normal digestion of food;

- raises blood sugar, as it is mainly a carbohydrate and has a high glycemic index. It is especially dangerous for diabetics and obese people. The high GI (glycemic index) of these carbohydrates causes a sharp jump in blood sugar;

- if maltodextrin powder was obtained from wheat starch, then it can be dangerous for people with intolerance to wheat gluten. They may have indigestion, skin reactions and other symptoms of intolerance.

Maltodextrin is a healthier sugar substitute. It is ideal for athletes as it provides the body's cells with the necessary energy and carbohydrates.

However, you must be careful with its use - after all, the substance can affect weight gain and cause the accumulation of body fat.
