Traminer is another long-known variety that has retained some of its primitive characteristics. It is valued mainly for its incredible aroma, as well as for the existence of large differences between the individual branches, especially in the aroma.
It is sometimes called Gewürztraminer. It produces many aromatic, high-quality white dry, semi-dry and sweet wines, as well as champagne wine materials.
Because it is a specially created variety, Traminer is not planted in large quantities, leaving only 775 hectares in Germany, 700 hectares in Austria, 2,590 hectares in France and 670 hectares in California. Bulgaria is also a small fragrant island, judging by the active presence of the traminer in the portfolio of all wineries.
Important to note is the fact that this is a capricious and difficult to grow grape variety. There are small clumps, and the yield in most cases is minimal.
Traminer wine surprises with an intense aroma, with predominant notes of rose and exotic fruits, golden yellow color, high alcohol content and relatively low acidity.
They all develop as they mature. Wines with exceptional sweetness are obtained when in colder climates the fruits are infected with noble mold.
The problem with Traminer wine (gewürztraminer) is that its lush and exotic aroma, dense and powerful body, very quickly saturate the senses. However, the best vintages are not so fragrantly intrusive and are serious and long-lasting wines.
Making a bridge between this wine and food is difficult, but not impossible. He can take in several directions. Extremely suitable are fruits, especially oranges, as well as tropical fruits - pineapple, mango, papaya.
When spices, it is good to emphasize curry, ginger, fennel seeds, cinnamon or cloves. Onions, coconut, soy sauce or honey go well with the dishes.
Smoked cheeses are one of the possible combinations with this wine. Gouda and smoked mozzarella are most recommended.
And because it is extremely pretentious, Traminer combines most successfully with smoked, salty and sweet dishes. However, when served with sweet dishes, care must be taken that the wine itself is sweeter than the food.
Combinations with sour dishes is unacceptable, as well as with delicately prepared poultry and seafood, because the wine will take over the dish. Whatever Traminer wine is served with, know that it must be chilled.
