Bulgarian fish producers predict that this year the table for St. Nicholas Day will be significantly cheaper. Domestic traders expect the pre-holiday market to be flooded with cheap carp, which this year marks record production.

Overproduction of fish will lead to a reduction in its commercial price. A number of smaller fishing shops stock carp only for St. Nicholas Day and prefer to sell it faster, albeit at a lower mark-up.

The owners of ponds and carp farms offer the fish for BGN 3 / kg to the resellers, who then fill the shops.

According to Yordan Kostadinov from BG Fish, it is very likely that this year the carp on St. Nicholas Day will be offered at prices lower than last year.

In 2012, the price per kilogram of carp on the eve of the holiday reached 6.50-7 BGN / kg. One of the big problems in the industry is the illegal traders, who undercut the price of the registered producers and are willing to sell their goods even at prices below BGN 3 / kg.

In order to escape unfair competition, a large part of Bulgarian producers export their goods to Romania.

According to the Association of Producers of Fish and Fish Delicacies, about 25 percent of the total amount of fish produced in Bulgaria is exported to our northern neighbor.

People who for one reason or another are not fans of traditional carp dishes, can put on the festive table for St. Nicholas Day delicious specialties with sea bream and sea bass imported from Greece.

Greek sea bream and sea bass have been available at very reasonable prices in Bulgarian stores for several months. The reason for this is the overproduction of both types of fish and the cheap imports with which Greece is literally flooding us.
