Experts have conducted a large-scale study of nearly 450,000 people on the Old Continent, which showed that if a person eats mainly fruits and vegetables, the risk of stroke and heart disease is many times less. Its purpose was to show how food affects our health.
During the nearly 12-year study, the eating habits and lifestyle in the observed target group were studied. It turned out that people who follow a semi-vegetarian diet have a 20 percent lower risk of heart disease. Participants on a semi-vegetarian diet are considered to be those whose menu includes 70 percent plant foods.
The results were compared with people whose meat consumption accounted for 45 percent of all food they ingested. The participants in the study are from 10 European countries. At the start of the medical study, all were clinically healthy and none of them had heart disease. The age range has ranged from 35 to 70 years.
The main conclusions that doctors have made are that the consumption of mainly plant products is essential for our health and prevention of heart problems.
Nutritionists who participated in the research team recommended a special diet. According to them, our daily menu should include at least 70 percent plant products.
Experts recommend fruits, vegetables, whole grains, legumes, nuts, low-fat dairy products, skinless meat, mainly chicken, fish.
