Pastrami beef became the next Bulgarian product to receive a protected name as a food with a specific character for the territory of the European Union.
The Bulgarian product received its protected name with an official EU decision, according to the native Ministry of Agriculture and Food.
Once pastrami beef has received a protected name, it will only be able to be produced within the country. If other countries decide to produce a similar product, it cannot be called Pastrami beef.
Bulgarian beef pastrami is a specialty of raw dried meat with taste and smell of ripe beef. The traditional method of production, characterized by the drying process, has made this type of product unique for Bulgaria, the EC statement added.
The members of the Association of Traditional Raw Dried Meat Products will have the right to produce Bulgarian pastrami, and new members will be able to join the association.

Other protected products from the association are Fillet Elena, Lukanka Panagyurska, Rolle Trapezitsa and Kayserovan neck Trakia.
Beef pastrami has joined a list of nearly 1,400 products that already have protected names across the EU.
The EU offers three types of protection for traditional agricultural products and food. In addition to traditional foods that can be produced throughout the Member State using certain technologies, it is possible to register products with a geographical indication and a designation of origin that can be produced in certain regions.
