The European Commission has approved Bulgaria's application for registration of Strandzha manna honey. The Bulgarian product will now have a protected name on the territory of the European Union.
The news was announced by EU Commissioner Maria Gabriel during the Strandzha Honey Festival, which took place in Tsarevo.
The long-awaited news was received with applause by the residents of the city, the participants in the Manna Honey Festival, scientists from all over the world and branch organizations, which have been fighting for the registration of the product for many years.
The application for registration of Strandzha manna honey has been approved by the European Commission. From here we are on the final straight. What is coming is to be published in the autumn in the Official Journal of the European Union and if there are no objections from the beginning of next year to have another emblem of Bulgaria - Strandzha manna honey, said EU Commissioner Maria Gabriel.
The problems of the branch were also discussed at the event, and among the main topics was the high mortality of bee families and the smaller quantities of Bulgarian honey in the last year.
Manna honey has a specific greenish or dark color, sometimes almost black. The deep brown color that we most often associate with the manna honey in question is due to the honeydew from the sweet plant juices.
Honey from conifers has a greenish tinge, and that associated with aphids and other insects is almost black.
