Bananas are one of the most common fruits in the world. You can find them in Asia, Africa, India and at any market or grocery store in Bulgaria. Bananas are a genus of tree-like plants, although technically herbaceous. Their fruit is one of the most anciently cultivated and known to humans for millennia.

The homeland of the banana is believed to be the Malay Archipelago, where the population used it as a food to supplement the fish diet. The term banana is used not only for the tree itself, but also for its fruit. They are grown mainly for food, fodder and as an ornamental plant.

Bananas have a different color, most often yellow when ripe, but can be red and pink, depending on the species and variety. As mentioned in the above lines, bananas are different in appearance and taste.

The most common are the dessert type of bananas, known to all. However, the sweet yellow fruit has a counterpart - less popular in Bulgaria, pungent in taste, which in any case can not be consumed without undergoing culinary processing. Not to be confused with delicious banana desserts, ice cream flights and served in Chinese restaurants.

We are talking about something else - the so-called plantain. In appearance it is very similar to the sweet banana, but it is greenish in color and is often confused by tourists visiting African countries. Strangers think he is not yet mature.

Plantain (or banana for frying) is most commonly used in Africa, Asia and other tropical places around the world. One of the reasons for this is that the tree bears fruit all year round and thus becomes a staple and daily food for millions of people. In Africa alone, fried bananas are on the menu of 90 million people every day.

Quite often the processing is identical to that of potatoes - fried, boiled, steamed, etc. Another interesting fact is that in Africa there are vegetables that have almost the same nutritional characteristics as potatoes - the so-called. "Eat", which is the size of a pumpkin.

As we wrote above, this banana undergoes culinary processing when ripe. In many places in India and Africa, it is used as a sweet addition to desserts once it is overripe and dark.

In many areas, plantain is dried and ground to make flour, sounds interesting, doesn't it? Banana flour! It is mixed with milk, boiled and used as baby food due to its high nutritional content.

Banana beer and banana wine - Do not be surprised, people work miracles! Alcohol can be prepared from any fruit.

Banana chips - as we wrote, the plantain has a fairly thin peel that is easy to remove. The edible part is cut into thin pieces, 1-2 millimeters thick, fried and excellent chips are obtained. It is no coincidence that the plantain is known in many places as the Caribbean potato. Enjoy!
