Basil is an annual plant with its own characteristic odor. It has an upright, branched, quadrangular, short-haired or almost naked, 20-60 cm high stem.
Basil originates from tropical and subtropical Asia. In our country it is grown in gardens throughout the country. Its usable parts are a stalk of basil and a stalk of chopped basil.
The plant requires heat and light. Water is also essential for its good development. High soil moisture is also needed during seed germination, during the development of the first true leaves and during budding. The soil itself should be rich in humus.
The treatment of the soil in which the basil will be grown requires abundant fertilization with manure - 4-5 tons, and 30-40 kg of superphosphate per acre in the fall, before deep plowing.
It is essential for the crop, especially if direct sowing is applied. It is done 30-40 days before sowing the seeds or planting seedlings.
Basil is propagated in two ways - by direct sowing and by seedlings.
Direct sowing takes place in early March - for warmer regions, until mid-April - for the rest of the country. Basil is very sensitive to low temperatures. Young plants can easily die.
The seeds are mixed with sand 1: 3 and sown to a depth of 0, 5-1 cm in the ground are placed by hand or with a seeder. The distances in the rows are 20-25 cm, and between them - 45-60 cm. After sowing the seeds are rolled.
If the temperature for the next 10 days is lower than 10 ° C, the seeds do not germinate and die. Therefore, it is recommended to cultivate it through seedlings.
When growing seedlings, the seeds are usually sown in the second half of March, in open or closed with polyethylene foil beds, with a width of 1, 2 m. Most often they are placed by hand, scattered or in rows every 10-15 cm.
The depth is about 0.5 cm and the soil is well moistened beforehand. When sown, cover the top with 1 cm of well-decomposed manure and water.
Seedlings require regular watering and weeding for 5-6 weeks. It is exported to the field only after the danger of frost has passed, ie. in mid-May. The finished seedling has a height of 8-12 cm, 5-6 pairs of leaves and a well-formed root system.
Basil seedlings are done manually or with a seedling machine. After sowing the plants are watered.
Care during the growing season consists of fertilizing, weeding and hoeing to keep the soil loose and free of weeds. Digging should be at least 2-3. In the rows they can be done mechanically, and in the rows - manually with a hoe. If the weather dries up, the plants are watered 1-2 times.
During growth, basil is susceptible to attacks by meadow butterfly caterpillars, ladybugs and aphids. To protect it, it is recommended to keep biological protection. Cleaning and hoeing are also mandatory.
The crop is harvested twice - at the beginning of flowering - June, as later the quality of the plant deteriorates, and in mid-September, while there is still no danger of frost.
