Rosemary is an evergreen perennial plant found in all countries of the Mediterranean and Asia Minor. This slow-growing shrub with narrow hard leaves, reminiscent of conifers. Reaches 1.5-2 meters in height. When its leaves are rubbed, the air is filled with a pleasant balsamic aroma.
The rosemary bush blooms from April to June. Its flowers are small and pale blue and irresistibly attract bees.
Although it is a Mediterranean shrub, rosemary is well known in our country. It grows mostly on the Black Sea coast and is widely used in Bulgarian folk medicine. It is also known as "grandmother's hair". It most often treats headaches and nervous disorders, improves memory and enhances brain function.
Apart from being an herb, rosemary is also used for cooking. It is added to dishes of fish, game and other roasted meats.
As it is a heat-loving plant and does not withstand low temperatures, rosemary is grown mainly in pots. The ideal place for a box of rosemary is the south balcony, well protected from the wind. It is advisable to propagate it by cuttings taken in August, as growing seedlings from seeds is very difficult.
For this you need an old rosemary plant. Its twigs are cut off, the leaves are cleared at the bottom and it is planted directly in boxes with light soil - clay-sandy. Another option is to root in water and then plant.
As long as it takes root, the plant is very sensitive to water. When the cuttings take root, they can be planted in soil with a very high content of gravel and coarse sand.
The best for growing rosemary are boxes or pots, which in winter should be stored at home in a not frosty, bright and ventilated place. The plant can withstand temperatures down to minus 5 ° C. It is taken out again after the slightest danger of frost has passed.
Rosemary does not require abundant watering. In winter it is watered when the soil is completely dry, and in summer - a little every day. Drought in the soil and air does not harm it. The heat only intensifies its aroma.
