The Regional Food Safety Agency in the town of Haskovo seized 1,340 kilograms of imported sweet pepper from Turkey due to the presence of the pesticide difenthiuron.

The Regional Agency reports that the shipment was destined for Sofia, but the harmful sweet pepper was detained at the Kapitan Andreevo BIP.

The pesticide difenthiuron is used to protect plants and plant products from pests, but is banned because of its harmful effects on the human body.

The detained consignment of 1340 kilograms of sweet pepper was redirected for rendering under the control of a representative of the Competent Authority.

To date, 29 cases of detained products at the border due to the presence of diafenthiuron have been identified in the European Union.

The products in which the pesticide was found were tea imported from China and Hong Kong, broccoli, which was also imported from China, okra and curry leaves - imported from India.

The EU says a shipment from Turkey has been seized for the first time, proving the presence of pesticides in the products.

The Bulgarian Food Safety Agency has notified the European Commission of the harmful pepper through the Rapid Alert System for Food and Feed RASFF.

The European Food Safety Authority reports high levels of pesticides in fruits and vegetables, with 97% of the products found in harmful chemicals in the last year.

The European Office's report shows that out of 79,035 samples taken, 97% of the food contains hazardous chemicals.

The safest for consumption are organic products, which have registered the lowest frequency of pesticides - 0.5%.

The foods with the lowest levels of pesticides are wheat flour, which registered the appearance of the dangerous chemical in 0.3% of cases, and potatoes - 0.6%.

On the other hand, spinach - 6.5%, beans - 4.1%, oranges - 2.5%, cucumbers - 2.1% and rice - 2% showed a high frequency of pesticides.

Data from the European Office clearly show that even in organic products, pesticides can be found, albeit in low amounts.
