In Bulgarian cuisine, oregano is used more often as a tea than as a spice. But in some foreign cuisines, such as Italian, oregano is revered.
It contains essential oil, which is due to its specific smell. However, aromatic grass has extremely useful qualities for the human body.
It has a beneficial effect on the gastrointestinal tract and bronchi. The components contained in oregano strengthen a person's immune system. The best thing about the spice is that it can be easily grown at home. Its flowers are extremely beautiful, and the plant itself is not pretentious for the care you give it.
For this you need a pot with a volume between 5 and 10 liters. The plant is cold-resistant, so you do not have to give it a special place in your home. It can also be grown on the balcony, as oregano is one of the few spices that can spend the whole winter outside and after the end of the season to give color again.
However, it is important to know that oregano loves the sun, so you need to put it in a bright place. Plant the plant in late February or mid-March at the latest.
Put earth and sand in the pot. Place pebbles at the bottom of the pot of your choice. Cover them with a thin layer of soil. Then place the seeds. Pour the rest of the soil on them. It should be a little over half of the pot.
Pour plenty of water. Be careful, if you put more sand, the seeds will germinate much more slowly. The correct norm is 40 percent sand on 60 percent land. If it is cold outside, do not rush to leave the plants on the balcony. Oregano loves water, so be sure to water it.
If many seeds have germinated, the best time for transplanting is in late May and early June.
You can use whole oregano stalks. Once the spice begins to bloom, it is advisable to cut the flowers and dry them. Store the finished spice in jars.
It is important to know that by cutting the entire stem, you allow the plant to regenerate. The fragrant leaf mass can be used without blooming.
