Sage is a sage that is used as an herb and spice. It is also grown for essential oil. In Bulgaria it grows both as a garden and as a potted plant. Both sage seeds and seedlings can be easily found on the market.
The genus Salvia includes about three hundred species of perennial and annual grasses and semi-shrubs. The most widely used in flowering is the species Splendens (Brilliant sage).
Salvia is propagated by seeds or cuttings. Seed collection begins in August and lasts until October.
This is done by cutting the overblown and slightly browned inflorescences and flowers. The seeds retain their germination for 3-4 years. If you are growing sage for the first time, it is best to buy the seeds.
The most suitable for growing the terrace in boxes are the low varieties. They are planted in the period March-April. The seeds are placed 7-8 cm apart.
The plant needs moderate watering with warm water, fertilizing, aeration and prevention of weeds. If the soil is very moist and abundantly fertilized, sage forms more vegetative mass at the expense of flowering.
Salvia is drought resistant, not demanding to the soil, as long as it is well permeable, tolerates direct light, shade and partial shade.
It tolerates pruning, during which it branches quickly and thickens. The plant can withstand very low temperatures, even when grown in pots.
The seeds germinate from a few days to 2 weeks. They are dipped in the standard way with 3 pairs of true leaves at a distance of 5-7 cm. You need to estimate how many roots you will need and transplant them again later at a distance of 10-15 cm.
If you have the opportunity, it is good to enrich the soil with crystal twice in the first year.
Salvia is watered mainly in summer. In the autumn, before it gets cold, it is watered for the last time. In the period from November to late March may not be watered.
At the beginning of the second year, the plants are pruned to the level of the soil or slightly above it. This activates growth. Such pruning is done every year.
At home, sage blooms in the second or third year.
