Thyme is a typical forest inhabitant. However, it grows well in pots. Propagation can be done by supplying other varieties or by using old specimens.
Potted thyme can be a wonderful addition to the balcony mosaic of beautiful useful plants and spices, so necessary for every housewife. It also makes a pleasant and very fragrant tea for cold evenings.
In general, thyme is considered the most unpretentious of all balcony spices. It can survive almost without water and will still bloom and smell blissful. The most pleasant is the lemon thyme, which is used to make delicious tea. It is also used as a seasoning for soup, along with a little oregano.
If you use an old plant, it is necessary to shorten the long shoots and remove the plant from the old pot. It is well cleaned from the soil and the ball with roots is cut with a sharp knife.
The new plants obtained in this way are placed in pots with pre-made drainage, in order not to rot their roots. The pot is supplemented with new fresh soil intended for balcony flowers. After planting, abundant watering is required.
As it is a drought-resistant plant, the requirements for soil moisture are increased only during transplanting. Keep in mind that after capturing the plants, excess moisture inhibits the development of thyme. It is watered only when the soil is extremely dry.
When growing thyme, you must take into account its climatic preferences. The plant grows mostly in the Mediterranean climate, which is why it is demanding to heat. In our country it develops well, and for Northern Bulgaria it is recommended to grow English thyme.
This variety withstands negative winter temperatures without having to mulch the plants in the field, while French thyme can suffer partial frosts in very cold and snowless winters. All varieties are subject to pot cultivation at home.
For thyme, choose a place well lit by light. The southern terraces are the most suitable. It is sensitive to light, especially in the initial period. Young plants do not tolerate shading and grow slowly.
