The plant viburnum, also known as rowan or fairy tree, is common in Bulgaria and is widely used in folk medicine. It grows mostly in forested mountainous areas and it is good for everyone to have dried viburnum available.
Kalina is used in folk medicine as a laxative, antirheumatic and diuretic action. The fruits of the plant are mainly used, which can be used for stagnation of body fluids, kidney diseases, intestinal catarrh, dysentery, diarrhea, liver problems and more.
Viburnum is a tall shrub that has a smooth gray-green bark. Its leaves are greenish, the upper part is darker and the lower part is grayish. In autumn, they turn red.
Viburnum flowers, which can also be used in folk medicine, are white in color. They have the same effect as the fruits of the herb, but with a much less pronounced effect.
The leaves of the herb can be used for skin diseases, and if they are crushed while still fresh, they are used in folk medicine as a compress for sprains or swelling.
The viburnum it is harvested as soon as its fruits ripen. This happens in the fall, usually between August and September. The fruits are dried in the shade or in a special dryer, and the temperature in it must be set at 70 degrees Celsius. The maximum allowable humidity is 11%. Once the fruits are completely dry, they are packed in paper bags, which are tightly closed and stored in a dry and dark place.
Viburnum fruits are rich in vitamin C, tannins, sugars, tartaric, malic and citric acid, pectin and more.
You can make viburnum for drinking as follows: Crush 1 tablespoon of dried fruit, which you boil for 5 minutes in 500 ml of water and drink the decoction of 1 glass of wine before meals 3 times a day.
The leaves and flowers can also be used to make a decoction, but you put 2 tablespoons of the herb in 400 ml. water. Also drink 1 glass of wine 3 times a day before meals.
