Summer is approaching, and with it come fresh fruit, which is eagerly awaited by many. One of the favorite fruits that ripen in late spring and early summer are cherries.

An extremely rich cherry harvest is expected this year, comment the owners of orchards in the Kyustendil region. The whole region is strewn with blossoming cherry trees.

What worries fruit growers, however, is the possibility of late frosts scalding the crop.

A prerequisite for this is the snow, which even at this time of year stands on the high parts of the Osogovo Mountain.

The other concern of the farmers is the tendency in recent years to plant indiscriminately all kinds of cherry trees, which give completely different varieties both in size and quality.

Part of the harvest in the area was also destroyed by hazelnut-sized hail, which hit Kyustendil and the region the day after St. George's Day.

The good news for fans of cherries is that due to the embargo imposed on Russia, there will be no export of Bulgarian cherries and their price will be well below last year's levels.

The first cherries, native production, are expected to appear on the market within 20 days and their price will be around BGN 1.50 - 3 per kilogram.

Currently, the Bulgarian markets are flooded with Greek cherries, which entice customers with a great appearance, but disappoint with their taste.
