Although it is a rich source of protein, the consumption of red meat increases the risk of stroke, according to an expert study cited by Reuters.
The study analyzed data from 11,000 people whose health was monitored for 23 years. None of the study participants changed their eating habits during the years they were observed.
At the end of the study, it was found that volunteers who said they consumed more red meat from the beginning increased their risk of heart attack by 47%.
In people who have not consumed this type of meat, a similar trend has not been found. There is also no link between diseases and other sources of protein such as chicken and seafood.
Although previous studies have found a link between high-protein diets and stroke, the results are conflicting. The present study confirms the notion that red meat poses a potential danger.
There is no problem to eat red meat - preferably tender, as long as it is in limited quantities, says the head of the medical team, Dr. Bernhard Haring.
A study by American scientists a few years ago found a chemical in red meat, which, according to them, explains why overeating leads to heart disease.
Before Nature Medicine, the team of nutritionists showed that the L-carnitine in red meat is transformed into the chemical TMAO, which increases the levels of bad cholesterol and thus endangers the heart.
TMAO is often overlooked, but has a significant effect on cholesterol metabolism, explains Dr. Hazen after the results.
The recommended dose of red meat is no more than 70 grams per day, doctors in the UK advise.
