Watermelon is an extremely favorite and beloved fruit vegetable in our country. There is almost no person who can resist a piece of juicy watermelon in the summer. There are several main varieties in Bulgaria, but a selection is being made for new ones, as foreign species are being imported and tested. Here are the varieties of watermelons:
Melon Stokes 647
Probably one of the earliest varieties of watermelon. Its fruits are small, with a thin rind. They are often surrounded by dark green stripes that merge with the main background. Thus, their tasty flesh is initially red, but has a yellow-orange hue, with a delicate, slightly fibrous texture.
Watermelon Marble 17
The fruits of this variety weigh up to 5 kg. each. The surface of the fruit is light green, with well-visible dark green spots and stripes. The watermelons themselves are moderately developed, with well-leaved main stems. The leaves have medium cut petioles. The edible part has high levels of sugar and is pink-red. Its structure is grainy and without veins. The seeds are large and tile red.
Watermelon Rositsa
This relatively new species for Bulgaria is superior to Marble 17 in terms of production of standard products. The fruits are again from medium to large, and the flesh is red, extremely grainy and very tasty.
Watermelon Sugar Baby
American variety, suitable mainly for early production. The fruits are small and spherical, with only the largest reaching 3-5 kg. The bark is thin and dark green. However, the taste of the variety is more than excellent.
Watermelon Peony
Also an early species that even surpasses the Sugar baby in standard fruit yield and early maturity. However, its fruits are quite large, again with a spherical appearance. The bark is medium thick and the meridian stripes are wide, curly and dark green. The flesh is tender and sweet, intensely red, with good taste.
Watermelon Boryana
The fruits of this variety of watermelon are spherical and quite large. Their bark is light green and the meridian lines are typically dark green. The edible part is mostly red.
Melon Crimson
This American variety is the most vigorously growing variety of watermelon. Its stems reach 3-4 meters, the leaves are large and the fruits are huge, weighing up to 8 kg. Their bark is light green, framed by dark green stripes. The edible, inner part is carmine red, tender, very tasty. The seeds are small, brown and black. This is the most common variety in our country.
Local yielding varieties are still widespread in different parts of the country. Such are Gulle, Pazardzhik blacks, Pleven blacks and Local improved.

Emphasize Watermelons And Melons This Summer
In the summer on the Bulgarian market there is an extremely large selection of fruits - the most preferred during the season are watermelons and melons. Slightly chilled, these fruits are a great way to save yourself at least a little from the summer heat.
Greek Watermelons Flood The Home Markets
It is almost impossible to buy Bulgarian watermelons from the markets in our country, as most of the summer fruits are imported from Greece. Bulgarian producers blame the rain for the lack of Bulgarian watermelons. Apart from the fact that the production is extremely low this year, the native farmers also face great difficulties with the competition from the Greek side, because the fruits from our southern neighbor are offered at lower prices than the domestic production.
The First Bulgarian Watermelons Are Already On The Market. Don't Buy Them
The first production of Bulgarian watermelons is already available in our country, but according to the producers they are not bought, as they are offered at slightly higher prices than the imported ones. The trade network is already flooded with Greek and Macedonian watermelons, which have seriously reduced the value of summer fruits, so that Bulgarian farmers are unable to market their production, bTV reports.
