It is almost impossible to buy Bulgarian watermelons from the markets in our country, as most of the summer fruits are imported from Greece. Bulgarian producers blame the rain for the lack of Bulgarian watermelons.
Apart from the fact that the production is extremely low this year, the native farmers also face great difficulties with the competition from the Greek side, because the fruits from our southern neighbor are offered at lower prices than the domestic production.
As customers are attracted mainly by the low price of watermelon, most exchanges and markets in our country offer mainly watermelons that are imported from Greece.
Domestic producers categorically state that they cannot lower the prices of watermelons because they have not received any state subsidies to compensate for their losses caused by torrential rains and hail this year.
Farmers are also dissatisfied with the fact that traders in our country deceive consumers by placing a sign against watermelons made in Greece, which says that the fruits are produced in the town of Lyubimets.
Last year, Bulgarian producers protested against the practice, but now say they have resigned because they are convinced the institutions will not take the necessary measures.
Many farmers have said they will stop producing watermelons next year.
"From 30 decares I reduced to 7 decares. Until 5-6 years ago the prices were good, we were satisfied, but now it is not so "- complain the producers.
This year the purchase prices of watermelons are extremely low, because the hail, which fell in most places in Bulgaria, has destroyed a large part of the harvest.
Watermelons in Lyubimets currently run between 15 and 20 stotinki per kilogram, and the campaign started from 40 stotinki 10 days ago.
Although the wholesale weight of a watermelon is about 15 stotinki, the retail weight of a kilogram of fruit is 50 stotinki.
However, traders predict that the price of watermelons will fall due to imports from Greece, and in early August the kilogram of fruit should have reached 40 cents.
