The sumac / Cotinus coggygria Scop./ is one of the most famous medicinal herbal plants in our country. There is probably no person who has not taken advantage of its strong healing properties at least once. It is also known as oak, tetra and cuckoo. Sumac is a shrub or tree up to about four meters high that can be found among shrubs and oak forests. It grows on stony, dry and calcareous soil.

Sumac is widespread in the warmer parts of our country, up to 800 meters above sea level. It is also found in southern Europe.

The branches of sumac have a reddish smooth bark and yellow wood.

The leaves are elliptical or ovate, with well visible veins. The leaves are gray-green below and dark green above. They have a characteristic odor and turn red in autumn. The flowers of sumac are bisexual, pale green, gathered in an inflorescence.

Composition of sumac

Sumac leaves contain 25% halothanin, gallic and ellagic acid. The essential oil of sumac has a very pleasant aroma, and its chemical composition is extremely complex: camphene, linaleol, tirpeneol, alphapinene, myrcene. The sumac stem contains the flavonoid fizetin. Contains tannin, which is concentrated in the leaves.

Collection and storage of sumac

For medicinal purposes, the leaves are collected, which must be picked at the beginning of flowering before fruit formation. They are detached very carefully without being crushed or dried. It is good to collect in the morning, after the dew has risen, in dry and sunny weather. Only healthy and fresh leaves are collected, and the best time for this is between June and August.

The leaves should also not be allowed to get wet, because in this case they lose much of the tannin content. Sumac can be purchased from any pharmacy, and its storage is standard - well packaged, in a dry and cool place, away from direct access to sunlight.
