What makes carbohydrates so important?

These nutrients are gasoline for an athlete's body. Extracting energy from fats and proteins is quite difficult with long and extreme efforts, such as training.

On the other hand, carbohydrate foods are easily digested and quickly converted into energy. Integral foods or cereals, legumes and nuts are usually recommended for active athletes. During long workouts, they also use a special carbohydrate gel.

It is known that one of the foods containing carbohydrates are potatoes, but they were not recommended until recently, because their sugar level is automatically shot up and at the same time falls rapidly down, which causes uncontrolled drops and rises in energy.

Recent research by Illinois scientists has shaken these notions. They found that mashed potatoes are so good for the active athletethat it can become an alternative to the gel that is actively used by athletes.

The study of American scientists included 12 cyclists who traveled more than 250 kilometers per week. They were divided into three groups. One group drank only water during the hikes. The second took their familiar carbohydrate gel. The third was fed mashed potatoes.

Several factors were studied - blood glucose levels; the temperature; the work of the stomach and the intensity of the training.

The results showed that the concentration of glucose when using carbohydrate gel and mashed potatoes is almost the same. The two groups of athletes expected similar results. Their results were better than those who only drank water.

The fact that the puree caused stomach complaints was reported as a negative effect, but the assumption is that this is due to the increased amounts of puree eaten.

Side effects do not change the main conclusion: mashed potatoes can replace sources of carbohydrates from various commercial products.
