A routine inspection by inspectors from the Bulgarian Food Safety Agency (BFSA) at farm raw milk collection points found Aflatoxin M1 at points in the Vidin, Gabrovo and Sofia regions.
Dangerous toxins were found in the control samples, which all milk collection points are obliged to take and send for inspection to the BFSA.
M1 aflatoxins are found in raw milk when animals are fed feed that is contaminated with aflatoxins. Aflatoxins are a type of natural mold that occurs in nature.
These toxins are extremely dangerous to human health because they are proven carcinogens of Group 1. Consumption of products contaminated with aflatoxins can cause bowel cancer in humans.
The content of Aflatoxins in the sample from the checkpoint in Vidin district, as well as the samples from the checkpoints in Gabrovo and Sofia district, is slightly above the maximum permissible concentration. BFSA inspectors confiscated and handed over the entire amount of raw milk for destruction.
Farmers have been banned from buying and trading in raw milk until they receive negative samples for the presence of aflatoxins in the purchased milk.
Experts from the BFSA and the Center for Risk Assessment at the BFSA have expressed the opinion that exceeding the maximum permissible amounts of aflatoxins per kilogram of raw milk in such small concentrations does not pose a danger to public health.
The maximum permissible consumption determines whether the milk can be distributed on the market or not. According to the responsible authorities, the risk of immediate health consequences is less than 1 case per 1 million population per year.
