There is hardly a person who can resist an appetizing piece of Garash cake, but although the name sounds foreign, this cake was created in Bulgaria a little over 100 years ago.

The cake is the work of the confectioner Costa Garas, who arrived from Austria-Hungary in Ruse in 1885. He names the sweet temptation after himself, and the historian Veselina Andonova finds out about the curious process around the creation of the cake.

In the show Wake up on Nova TV, she shared that she discovered this fact by accident after digging in the folders of the state archives.

The cake was served for the first time at the Islah Hane Hotel, which was the first luxury hotel in Bulgaria at the end of the 19th century.

The complex was Viennese in style, so they hired Costa Garash as a chef.

He takes over the hotel kitchen, and his photos from the time he was chef are kept to this day. In the center of Ruse at that time was the residence of Alexander Battenberg, and the prince often ate in Islam khan.

It was in this building that Garash mixed the famous cake for the first time, and in the beginning it was served only to the aristocracy visiting Ruse.

In 1900, however, Costa Garas moved to Sofia and took over the management of a hotel in the capital. There he prepares his cake again and so the people of Sofia managed to taste the cake long before it became popular in Europe.
