About 2,500 tons of spoiled and counterfeit food for sale were confiscated in 47 countries around the world in a joint action by Interpol and Europol, informs AFP.

The two international organizations seized dried fruits, oil, mozzarella, eggs and other counterfeit products, which were to be sold to consumers around the world.

The operation ended with numerous arrests, but the number of detainees has not been announced yet. Interpol and Europol say investigations into the case will continue.

The large-scale action involved police officers, customs officers, employees of food safety agencies, companies from the private sector. Grocery stores and food outlets at airports, ports and industrial areas were inspected.

The campaign started in December and continued throughout January.

Authorities in Italy alone seized 31 tons of seafood, which were frozen and then immersed in a chemical containing citric acid, phosphate and hydrogen peroxide to make them look fresh.

85 tons of meat and 20,000 liters of fake whiskey were confiscated and destroyed in Thailand. The goods were imported into the country illegally and were intended for sale.

During the operation in the UK, 275,000 liters of alcohol were seized from a factory that produced alcohol illegally.

An inspection by the authorities in Colombia, Ecuador, Paraguay, Uruguay and Peru has found that the biggest food infringements are committed when they are imported.

In an attempt to avoid the duty, many suppliers hide the goods in packages, and this storage makes them unsafe for consumption and poses a risk to the health of consumers.

The aim of the large-scale operation was to identify the criminal networks behind the trafficking of counterfeit and dangerous to human health and life food.

Part of the global inspection of Interpol were the markets in Bulgaria, as well as those in our neighboring Romania and Turkey.
