The type of person you will be eating in the company of can affect the amount of food you eat and consume. That's according to a new study cited by Science Daily.
Research by researchers at Cornell University shows that the likelihood of serving and eating more food increases significantly when an overweight person is seated at a table next to you.
In addition, the results of the study prove the claim that when you eat in the company of a full person, you will most likely adhere to an unhealthy menu.
The study emphasizes the importance of pre-selecting a dish before entering the restaurant. If you enter a restaurant with a clear attitude about what you order, you are less likely to be negatively affected by everything that makes you eat more, explains study leader Mitsuru Shimizu.
82 students took part in the study. They had to eat spaghetti and salad. Among them was an actress who had a special prosthesis to make her look thicker than she actually is.
Four scenarios were envisaged for the study. According to the first, the actress put on more salad and less spaghetti while wearing the prosthesis.
According to the second scenario, she took the same amount of both foods, but without looking like a fat woman. Adhering to the third scenario, the actress put on more spaghetti and less salad, while wearing a special prosthesis. The placed woman had to serve the same amount of pasta and salad when she was without the prosthesis.
The researchers noticed that in each of the scenarios, the students first watched what the actress was doing and then poured themselves spaghetti and salad.
Experts found that when the actress looks fat, participants put in and eat 31.6 percent more spaghetti, whether she poured more pasta or more salad. While the woman wore the prosthesis and served more greens, the participants again preferred to eat more spaghetti.
According to experts, when people are in the company of a full person, they stop thinking about healthy eating and tend to prefer dishes that have a bad effect on weight.
