The sale of white brined cheese in Bulgaria is much lower compared to the consumption in 2006, shows an analysis of the Institute of Agrarian Economics, quoted by the newspaper Trud.
Consumption of yellow cheese in our country has also fallen. At the expense of dairy products, Bulgarians are increasingly buying their alternatives from palm or other vegetable oils.
Imported cheeses and yellow cheeses, which can now be easily found on the Bulgarian markets after Bulgaria became a member of the European Union in 2007, compete with the typical Bulgarian cheese and yellow cheese, which also explains the lower consumption of Bulgarian dairy products..
According to experts, in 2016 there will be a slight increase in sales of white brined cheese, but the consumption of imitation dairy products will increase to 49,000 tons per year.
In 2014, white cheese reached critical values of only 13,000 tons of sales for the entire calendar period. The hopes are that in 2016 this amount will increase to 16,000 tons, and by 2020 it should remain at 18,000 tons.
Bulgarian yellow cheese is also on the market, although not so big.
According to the data, in 2006 the domestic consumption of yellow cheese was around 40,000 tons per year. In 2014, it dropped to 31,000 tons, and the forecasts are for a gradual increase in consumption. By 2020, this consumption will reach about 35,000 tons.
As a reason for these data, analysts point to the increased amount of European yellow cheeses in our country, which are similar in appearance and taste to the native yellow cheese, but in most cases are much cheaper than it.
In 2006 the imported yellow cheese in Bulgaria was only 1000 tons, but in 2014 it has already reached 10,000 tons per year.
Imports of overseas cheeses continue to grow, with Cheddar, Emmental and Gouda consuming the most, reaching 13,000 tonnes a year.

They Replace Yellow Cheese With Gouda Cheese
In the local shops they massively replace the yellow cheese with Gouda cheese, as the price of the Dutch dairy product is much lower than the familiar yellow cheese. Although it is offered at attractive prices for consumers, such as BGN 6-7 per kilogram, the taste of Gouda cheese does not resemble yellow cheese at all.

We Buy And Eat More And More Food
It is as if only the food industry remained unaffected by the global crisis. You can't help but notice that as more and more small businesses or clothing stores and studios close their doors, the growth of food chains is becoming more tangible and large-scale.
