Tons of edible Easter cakes and eggs have gone to waste after the Easter holidays. Observations show that Bulgarians continue to buy more than they actually eat.

Our nation is at the top of the food waste charts. This trend is strongest during the big holidays in our country.

Nearly a third of the world's food does not reach the table at all, simply because it is more than necessary, according to world statistics.

Every Bulgarian wastes almost 100 kilograms of completely edible food per year.

The retail chains admit to Nova TV that 10% of their Easter and Christmas goods remain unsold. They then reduce the products by up to 50% so that they can sell them before their expiration date.

We can not afford not to have goods until the last moment, so it is better to stay than to miss something - says Nikola Toskov - manager of a metropolitan store of a large food chain.

The discounts on Easter goods will be in force this week as well, but most retailers suspect that there will be a lot of unsold and discarded products.

Instead of being discarded, these foods can be donated to the Bulgarian Food Bank and help people in need. That is why social organizations are pushing for VAT on donations to be reduced so that more people can donate food.

We save at least 260 tons of food in one calendar year. Of course, this is not enough against the background of those 640,000 tons that are wasted per year in our country, but it is a good start - says Tsanka Milanova - Executive Director of the Bulgarian Food Bank.

With the donated products every year the food bank manages to feed 22,000 Bulgarians in need.
