The joint inspections of the Bulgarian Food Safety Agency and the Consumer Protection Commission start before the Easter holidays.
As of today, April 2, intensive inspections in the commercial network and online space of eggs, Easter cakes and lamb, which are traditionally present at the festive table, begin.
The control bodies will monitor the correctness of the discounts and the origin of the goods. In case of established violation, fines of up to BGN 50,000 will be imposed.
The inspectors of the CPC and the BFSA will be joined by experts from the State Agency for Technical Supervision of Municipalities, who inspect the markets and places where the traditional Easter products are most often offered.
By law, traders are required to sell the goods at the old prices for at least 30 days before announcing discounts. If the inspections find that the prices were lowered only a few days earlier, the trader will be sanctioned for unfair practice.
Mass inspections in the country will also cover online trade. The CPC will monitor the promotions on the Internet just a few days before the big Christian holiday.
The Union of Bakers warns us to be most careful with Easter cakes, because this year the market will be flooded with fakes.
Dimitar Lyudieva from the Regional Union of Bakers in Burgas told Monitor that the ritual bread should have a pale yellow color, as the eggs do not reach the strong saturation of duck yellow, which we often see in Easter cakes in stores.
The advice to consumers is to choose only traders from whom they have shopped before and are satisfied.
Due to strong competition in the industry, higher Easter cake prices are not expected shortly before Easter, but producers have announced that they will raise the price of lamb.
