Vending machines, from which Bulgarian students buy waffles, salads, soft drinks, chips, biscuits and other foods harmful to their health, will be removed and banned from schools.

The news was announced by the Minister of Health Petar Moskov, who together with the Minister of Sports Krasen Kralev launched a campaign for the health of Bulgarian children under the motto Healthy at school.

This idea is accompanied by the introduction of a third compulsory class in physical education and sports.

The new changes in Bulgarian schools are dictated by the fact that the number of overweight children in our country is growing alarmingly.

Recent surveys show that 18% of Bulgarian students are overweight and 8% are obese.

The main reasons that experts point to for these alarming data are the lack of exercise in the younger generation and unhealthy eating.

For this reason, the Regional Health Inspectorates have launched a series of inspections in school shops. There are established norms about what is allowed to be sold to children and what is not. However, not all traders follow the rules, parents warn.

However, the school stalls themselves say that even if they offer only healthy food, the change for healthier eating can not be implemented in practice, as only meters from the school there are pavilions that sell tempting harmful foods and drinks.

Shopkeepers claim that the big problem is the producers themselves, who produce harmful foods. According to them, the companies themselves must limit the harmful ingredients in their goods.

Minister Moskov is also adamant that the problem is rooted in the producers themselves. He will therefore continue to push for a tax on harmful foods.

This tax will additionally be levied on all producers of goods containing excessive amounts of salt, sugar and caffeine.

The Minister of Health says that it is inadmissible to sell children food in which half of their content is from sweeteners and other harmful substances.

At the same time, the Consumer Protection Commission began mass inspections of shops and pavilions in the school area on September 16 to check whether they were selling alcohol and cigarettes to students.
