The 181st Oktoberfest was officially launched on September 20 in Munich. A 200-year-old beer keg was opened especially for the holiday in the Bavarian capital.
The festival began in the morning with a procession of brewers, and at noon the mayor of Munich Dieter Reiter started the traditional festival by opening a 200-year-old beer keg with a hammer.
This year's Oktoberfest will last until October 5, with organizers expecting more than 6 million visitors this year. Traditionally, Germans are the main visitors to the festival - 70% of the guests at the beer fest are Germans. Apart from them, Oktoberfest is also attended by large groups of Americans and Italians.
More than 7 million liters of beer are expected to be sold this year. The price of the sparkling liquid at the festival is between 9.70 and 10.10 euros per liter.
Last year, Oktoberfest was attended by 6.4 million people who drank 7.7 million liters of beer. During the two weeks of the festival, visitors ate tens of thousands of grilled Bavarian sausages and pork chops.
1.1 billion euros were spent on the beer festival in 2013.
The amount includes the sale of beer and the accompanying culinary temptations, as well as the income of the owners of hotels, shops and taxi drivers.
Oktoberfest is also famous for its tents, which can accommodate up to 10,000 people. This year, a one-liter mug of beer is more expensive than last year. The most expensive mug in 2013 reached 9.85 euros.
For the first time Oktoberfest was held on October 17, 1810 in honor of the wedding of Ludwig of Bavaria and Princess Theresa. Gradually, the holiday becomes one of the most spectacular events of the year.
On the occasion of the festival, Munich brewers make a special beer - Wiesn Märzen, with a higher alcohol content.
Millions of guests from all over the world flock to the festival tents to taste the unique German beer, as well as to have fun on the trains, carousels and the Ferris wheel.
