Bulgarian students will be able to take advantage of the School Fruit Scheme this year as well. For this purpose, fourteen million levs are provided in the State Fund for Agriculture. As in previous times, the program aims to provide children with fresh fruits and vegetables and to emphasize the importance of healthy eating.
That is why the acceptance of documents for support under the School Fruit Scheme started on August 17, and applications will be able to be submitted until September 23 this year in the regional directorates of the State Fund for Agriculture.
It turns out that in children from 6 to 10 years of age in our country there is a very unbalanced diet. According to experts, the intake of fruits and vegetables, as well as milk, is well below the standards.
Consumption of whole grains is also not high. A recent survey found that only fifty percent of children in the country include fruits and vegetables in their diet. This can be due to both poverty and poor eating habits.
Thanks to the program School fruit the kids' daily menu will be supported by a variety of fruits and vegetables. In addition, nutritionists hope that in this way children will get used to putting more useful plant foods in their plate.
It is estimated that this time 480 thousand children from kindergartens and students from first to fourth grade in schools will benefit from the School Fruit Program. In connection with the scheme, each child will be offered fresh fruits and vegetables, the total value of which will be BGN 27.
The value of one portion remains the same as in the previous year - BGN 0.68 without VAT. However, changes have been made in the ordinance under which the program is administered. According to them, the fruits and vegetables that will be provided by School Fruit will be procured through local purchases or from local exchanges and markets. The only exceptions will be citrus fruits and bananas.
The State Fund for Agriculture reminds school principals that they can apply for the School Fruit Program only through one applicant.
