A second batch of ice cream made from egg powder with infected fipronil was found during inspections in Bulgaria. The content of fipronil was above the permissible levels.

93 kilograms of powdered egg yolk in 12.5 kilograms of ice cream were added to the problematic batch, which has already been withdrawn from the market and will be sent for destruction, the Bulgarian Food Safety Agency assures.

Another 403 kilograms of fipronil-infected egg yolk, which is not used for other products, were found in the manufacturer's warehouse.

The Food Safety Agency adds that they check every new shipment of eggs and egg products that enter Bulgaria from European Union countries.

They are subjected to a laboratory test to determine if they are infected with fipronil. Similar measures apply to eggs of Bulgarian origin.

Egg farms, warehouses for trade in eggs and egg products, as well as egg processing enterprises in the country are subject to inspection.

The BFSA has notified the EC of the second contaminated batch through the RASSF rapid alert system.

Fipronil (Fipronil) is an insecticide that has been found in eggs on the market in a number of Western European countries. The substance is highly toxic and is used for crop protection and in veterinary medicine to control fleas, ticks and cockroaches.
