This year, wine producers will have the right to add sugar to the drink, because due to the bad weather the grapes from this year's harvest have registered lower sugar content.

The news was announced by the head of the Agency for Vine and Wine Krassimir Koev, who said that for the first time in 5 years, producers will have the right to increase the natural alcohol content of the drink.

The reason why the ban on adding sugar to wine fell was that this year the weather conditions led to lower sugar content of the grapes.

The Vine and Wine Agency states that wineries that benefit from the permission not to add sugar to the wine will be strictly controlled so that they do not exceed the allowed amount of sugar.

There is equipment to detect such attempts. Gone are the days when 5-10 grams per liter could be added uncontrollably, the Agency said.

According to the rules of Brussels, it is allowed to increase the alcohol content to 1.5 percent by volume.

Krassimir Koev adds that the Bulgarian Mavrud has the greatest need for additional sugar.

The Agency forecasts that the quality of wine from this year's harvest will be lower than last year.

Russia, which is the main market for our grape drinks, however, has stricter wine requirements. Traders there do not allow any use of sugar in beverages. That is why wine with added sugar cannot be exported to Russia, the industry commented.

Sugaring is a common practice in northern European regions, such as Germany, where temperatures are lower and there is not enough sunlight and light for the grapes to ripen.

Experts predict that the wine we will drink this year will be of poorer quality than last year. The conditions for the grapes this year were not good. Intense rain and hail ruined much of the crop.

This led to a shortage of grapes on the market and further sugaring of the wine.
