The market is full of fruits and vegetables. Experts advise how to distinguish Bulgarian from imported products.
The season of Bulgarian tomatoes, watermelons and peaches is here, but Greek products prevail on the domestic market. Bulgarian greenhouses produce really good vegetables and most of them fall on our market. However, their production is becoming increasingly difficult.
This year, in addition to high costs, some unpleasant climatic surprises led to frost and the destruction of part of the crop.
These are the reasons why at the moment the Bulgarian tomato is more and more uncompetitive at the stall and is permanently displaced from the Greek, Turkish or Polish one, for example.
At present, 80% of the fruits and vegetables on the market are imported. The control bodies claim that the percentage is not more than 60. However, the fact is that the Bulgarian puts on the table goods from Greece, Turkey, Romania, Albania, Poland and Macedonia.
The industry estimates that in the last 20 years the production of some fruits and vegetables in our country has decreased by 10 times. At present, Greek fruits and vegetables are much cheaper on the stock exchanges. In addition to being more expensive, the native tomato has a more unsightly appearance, but also tastier.
Today, the average price of tomatoes on the stock exchange is BGN 1.30. The imported one can be found for BGN 1.40, and the domestic one - between BGN 1.75 and 2.20. Our product is not as shiny as the imported one, but it is of very good quality.
You will recognize the Bulgarian tomato when it is more unsightly, with good taste and thin skin. The Greek is tough and fleshy, with thick skin.
If you want to try Bulgarian watermelons, choose the rounder and smaller ones. Inside, they are also lighter.
