Following a signal to the Bulgarian Food Safety Agency (BFSA), the inspectors responsible for quality control of fresh fruits and vegetables carried out mass inspections in commercial warehouses and production facilities.

The inspected sites were 101, and the experts found violations only in one commercial and one production site.

During an inspection on March 15 at sites of the Carrefour retail chain, repackaged imported bioproducts, which the company has offered to its customers as Bulgarian. The products found were oranges, lemons and grapefruits, which according to the documents submitted by the company are of Greek origin.

The company has submitted the relevant commercial documents and Certificates for organic production, which show that the found fruits were produced by a certified Greek organic producer.

The Bulgarian company Amititsa is a certified organic producer and operator of bioproducts. According to BFSA experts, the products meet all quality standards and are fully edible.

The infringement committed by the manufacturing and trading company concerns the labeling where, as the producer country of the organic fruits, Bulgaria is indicated. In this way, the rights of consumers are violated and they are misled that they buy and consume Bulgarian products.

An in-depth inspection by the Food Safety Agency at the French food giant's establishments has revealed additional violations. According to BFSA inspectors, Carrefour has violated the Law on the Implementation of Common Organizations in Agricultural Markets in the European Union by offering products with deteriorating quality indicators.

In Bulgaria, the share of holdings certified to perform organic farming is extremely small, and the land used for organic farming is only 0.1% of the total agricultural area of the country.

Only 5% of the produced bioproducts are sold on the Bulgarian market. The remaining 95% is exported mainly to the United States, Canada and the European Union. Bulgarian organic producers mainly produce herbs - dried and tea, fresh and frozen fruits and vegetables, honey and nuts.
