A supplier of Bulgarian salami in the town of Dartfort has been sanctioned with 5,000 pounds. The reason for the fine is the sale of a product whose content is composed of almost 50 percent horse meat, reports thisislocallondon.co.uk.
This is the first case in the United Kingdom since the horsemeat scandal erupted early last year. In September 2013, the supplier Expo Foods provided Bulgarian salami under the name Lukanka Chumerna. Horse meat (48.8 percent) was found in meat products, the presence of which was not reported on the label of the salamis in question.
The producer of a meat product - the native company Aktual, was "highly recommended" to Expo Foods by owners of supermarkets in the Eastern European country. 4 years ago the supplier started to buy meat from the Bulgarian company.
In September last year, he ordered twenty kilograms of Lukanka Chumerna sausage. According to the information on the label, this product is made only from beef and pork, vegetable fiber and spices, but the truth is quite different.
Fortunately for the consumers, only three kilograms of Lukanka Chumerna were sold. The remaining seventeen kilos were still in storage. The petitioner will have to pay a fine of £ 5,000 for the infringement. He was also ordered to pay £ 2,500 in court costs.
We remind you that due to the scandal with horse meat from the beginning of 2013 in the UK, more and more serious measures are being taken against pushing horse meat into food products.
On this occasion, the British company Oxford Instruments and the Institute for Food Research have even developed a device to identify meat before it is processed.
The device can successfully distinguish the fatty acids of horses, cows, pigs, sheep and geese. The manufacturers explain that each fat emits a specific signal.
This device is very convenient and even saves money, as you do not have to spend 500 pounds on DNA tests and at the same time the results are ready relatively quickly.
