Artificial sweeteners are found in many products, from cough syrups to salad toppings, but new research suggests that this alternative to sugar can actually lead to weight gain.
The chances of developing diabetes, high blood pressure, heart disease and obesity are linked to the consumption of artificial sweeteners, according to a new large-scale study on the effects of sugar substitutes.
The study was conducted by scientists from the University of Manitoba, Canada. It summarized data from 37 studies that analyzed more than 400,000 people over a 10-year period.
The results show a statistically significant association between the consumption of artificial sweeteners and the higher risks of diabetes and heart disease, as well as weight gain, said study leader Professor Megan Azad.
Unlike Canadian scientists, most of their colleagues working in companies producing artificial sweeteners claim that the product they develop is completely safe.
Artificial sweeteners are synthetic food additives that provide a sweet taste that mimics sugar but contains significantly fewer calories. Many products that contain them are usually labeled as low-sugar or simply dietary. They are presented as useful and recommended for weight loss. However, this claim is disputed by the new study.
Despite the fact that millions of people routinely consume artificial sweeteners, relatively few patients have been included in clinical trials of these products, says Professor Azad.
Given the widespread and growing use of artificial sweeteners and the current epidemic of obesity and related diseases, more research is needed to determine the long-term risks and benefits of these products, the study author added.
