The closer the bright Easter holidays get, the more intense the work of the inspectors from the Bulgarian Food Safety Agency (BFSA).
Apart from low-quality egg paints, unlabeled eggs of unknown origin and quality, the agency's experts must also look out for lamb without the relevant documentation, which many enterprising traders will try to sell for Easter and St. George's Day.
The association of Bulgarian bakers warns of a new potential danger. Fake Easter cakes will flood the Bulgarian market for the holidays. These are not just imitation products, but products that can pose a health risk to consumers.
The reason for the concern is the transfer of Easter cakes from the category of bakery products to the category of "pastries". In this way, the production of Easter cakes, not according to traditional recipes, but from artificial mixes with eggs, sugar, sweeteners and milk becomes completely legal.
Although ready-made mixes for the production of Easter cakes are safe for health according to European standards, their chemical composition is filled with a large number of preservatives and dyes. Moreover, the sugar in them is replaced by the sweetener acesulfine.
Consumption of products that contain acesulfine can be dangerous to health. The most endangered are children, in whom this substance can cause nervous disorders.
People with sensitive stomachs who may experience intestinal discomfort should not be overlooked. Acesulfine can cause acute allergic reactions and dermatological problems.
None of the competent authorities or producers is able to predict what part of the Easter cakes on the Bulgarian table will be produced by traditional technology with real eggs, milk and sugar and how much they will be kneaded from artificial mixes.
